In midstream floating, evening closing in,
Across the Hsiang see the mist wreaths rise!
Along the shore dry rushes stretch away
Until they join with Hupeh's gloomy skies.
Afar the geese burst through the driving snows
That on the marsh of Yün and Meng descend.
Alone to cross yon treacherous Tung-ting Lake
Upon your parting vessel you ascend.
About the distant mountains circle round
The wind-tossed waves and dimly dying day.
The Milky Way peers sparkling through the night,
To join the waters as they flow away.
Outdragging days in winter's bitter breath
Some falling plum blooms sadly life retain.
But when you reach the old remembered spot,
New Year will spring to greet you home again!
