The city is silent,
Sound drains away,
Buildings vanish in the light of dawn,
Cold sunlight comes on the highest peak,
The thick dust of night
Clings to the hills,
The earth opens,
The river boats are vague,
The still sky-
The sound of falling leaves.
A huge doe comes to the garden gate,
Lost from the herd,
Seeking its fellows.
In Po-ti town the watchman's rap is over for to-night. On Yang-t'ai Hill the dawn grows up from darkness into light. Upon the lofty mountain peaks the sunlight glances chill. Below o'er masséd ranges sleep the night-dark cloudlets still. Above the river's bank up peers a slowly gliding sail. The day so clear makes audible each falling leaflet frail. Beside the gate of woven thorn pass by a pair of deer. Ah! could I join your troop to go where fairies linger near! The last watch has sounded in K'uei-chon. Color spreading above Sun-Terrace Mountain, a cold sun clears high peaks. Clouds linger, blotting out canyons below tangled ridges, and deep Yangtze banks keep sails hidden. Beneath clear skies: clatter of falling leaves. And these deer at my bramble gate: so close here, we touch our own kind in each other. The city is silent, Sound drains away, Buildings vanish in the light of dawn, Cold sunlight comes on the highest peak, The thick dust of night Clings to the hills, The earth opens, The river boats are vague, The still sky- The sound of falling leaves. A huge doe comes to the garden gate, Lost from the herd, Seeking its fellows. |
