The bright, thin, mew moon appears,
Tipped askew in the heavens.
It no sooner shines over
The ruined fortress than the
Evening clouds overwhelm it.
The Milky Way shines unchanging
Over the freezing mountains
Of the border. White frost covers
The garden. The chrysanthemums
Clot and freeze in the night.
The crescent Moon desired to mount on high. Its slanting course ne'er grew to orbéd sway. A little while it peered above the Hill; Then lost in cloudy Sunset passed away. The Milky Way no change of color knew. No lofty peaks gleamed chiller for its fears. The dews that fall so white within the Court The flowers' cups wept full with quiet tears. With a thread of light the new moon climbs up the blue; It's not a round wheel as the shadow looks askew. The while gleaming above the ancient fort beyond, She has slunk into the clouds and can hardly be found. The constellated Milky Way is always bright; The frontier mountain pass looms upon the chill site. The crystalline dew-drops scatter in the little park; The clusters of chrysanthemums glisten in the dark. Such a thin moon! in its first quarter a slanting shadow a partly finished ring barely risen over the ancient fort hanging at the edge of the evening clouds the Milky Way hasn't changed color the mountain passes are cold and empty there's white dew in the front courtyard secretly filling the drenched carnations. |
