While a cold wind is creeping under my mat,
And the city's naked wall grows pale with the autumn moon,
I see a lone wildgoose crossing the River of Stars,
And I hear, on stone in the night, thousands of washing-mallets....
But, instead of wishing the season, as it goes,
To bear me also far away,
I have found your poem so beautiful
That I forget the homing birds.
While a cold wind is creeping under my mat, And the city's naked wall grows pale with the autumn moon, I see a lone wildgoose crossing the River of Stars, And I hear, on stone in the night, thousands of washing-mallets.... But, instead of wishing the season, as it goes, To bear me also far away, I have found your poem so beautiful That I forget the homing birds. Over my mat brushed early the cold wind, The empty city bathed in pale moonlight, One lonely wild-goose across the Starry River, While thousands of washing-mallets heard at night. The season is now late and well advanced, And thinking of you made me sleep slight; I relished your graceful lines so long – Till cawing rooks ushered in the day bright. On my long bamboo mat I welcome the first of the breeze; The pale moon is hazy over the empty city wall. There’s a single autumn goose up in the Milky Way; In countless homes washing is pounded in the night. From the season it’s clear it must be late in the year; Our minds are so close, I’ve been slow to get to sleep. I’ve just begun reciting your elegant verses – Before I know it, the crows have started to caw. |
