There where the sea floats up the sky,
You wane from the world in your fragile boat....
The water and the moon are as calm as your faith,
Fishes and dragons follow your chanting,
And the eye still watches beyond the horizon
The holy light of your single lantern.

By Fate to our great city hither whirled, You must have come like walking in a dream. O'er oceans wide the skies as floating seem. Your Buddhist skiff full lightly quits the world. Your meditations moons and seas did share; And wave-born monsters heard your bell of prayer. But yet, alas! o'er endless leagues at night How lone your one small lantern in your sight! By Fate to our great city hither whirled, You must have come like walking in a dream. O'er oceans wide the skies as floating seem. Your Buddhist skiff full lightly quits the world. The moon and water know something Buddhism can lend; To the chanted Sutra fish and dragons their ears bend. That which we hold dear is the solitary light From thousand and thousand li away shining bright. |
