Having to travel back now from this far place,
I dismount beside your lonely tomb.
The ground where I stand is wet with my tears;
The sky is dark with broken clouds....
I who played chess with the great Premier
Am bringing to my lord the dagger he desired....
But I find only petals falling down,
I hear only linnets answering.
Having to travel back now from this far place, I dismount beside your lonely tomb. The ground where I stand is wet with my tears; The sky is dark with broken clouds.... I who played chess with the great Premier Am bringing to my lord the dagger he desired.... But I find only petals falling down, I hear only linnets answering. I have to run about again in distant lands, And halting the horse, I leave your lone tomb with folded hands. Everywhere soaked with my tears the soil is hardly dry; There are broken clouds hovering in the lowering sky. I've followed you like the chess-player with the Grand Tutor Xie; As in the story, I come to hand the sword for King Xu. What I see only are the flowers falling in the woods; And as if sending me off I hear but the orioles' woes. Having got to run about again in the distant land, And halting the horse, I leave your lone tomb with folding hands. Everywhere soaked with my tears the soil is not dry; There are broken clouds hovering in the lowering sky. I've followed you, like the chess-player with the Grand Tutor Xie; I come just like in the story of the sword for Monarch Xu. What I see only are the flowers falling in the woods; And as if sending me off I hear but the orioles woes. As I travel again to $(a place)$ away from home, I stop my horse to take leave at a lonely grave. The earth is soaked by tears recently shed From broken clouds hanging in a low sky. I sat with you playing chess, my Grand Tutor Xie; I took up my sword and looked for you, my lord of Xu ‒ But all I see is the blossom falling from the trees; The song of an oriole follows me on my way. Far from home with farther still to travel I stop my horse beside this lonely grave the earth is wet as if from recent weeping the low sky is full of broken clouds the two of us used to play weiqi unruffled by bad news but I have come too late to present you with my sword there's nothing here to see but blossoms falling in the forest nothing to hear but the song of an oriole sending me on my way. |
