Last night, while a gust blew peach-petals open
And the moon shone high on the Palace Beyond Time,
The Emperor gave P'ing-yang, for her dancing,
Brocades against the cold spring-wind.
Last night the wind of spring laid bare the peach flowers of the well. Before the Palace soared the moon with radiance clear but fell. Within His room the actress maid his shifting love had won. WIthout-the silken robe he gave could not the chill dispel. Last night a gentle spring breeze Set in bloom the peach trees. The moon was high and bright, And on the Palace shed its light. A dancing girl who knows to sing Is newly favoured by the King. A brocade robe is bestowed to the fair Against the chilly outside air. |
