The sand below the border-mountain lies like snow,
And the moon like frost beyond the city-wall,
And someone somewhere, playing a flute,
Has made the soldiers homesick all night long.
Below the Hui-lo Peak the sand shines clear and white as snow. Around Shou-chiang city like frost the moonbeams flow. Who blows yon wailing reedy flute whose echo shrills my ear, And tunes the warrior's heart all night to dream of home so dear? Below the border-mountain lies sand like snow white; Beyond the city-wall like frost the moon shines bright. Nobody knows from where is wafting a flute song, The warriors lie awake homesick all the night long. The sands in front of Huile hill could have been the snow; The moonlight looked like frost below the Shouxiang city walls. Someone was playing a reed flute, who knows where, And all through the night the soldiers yearned longingly for home. |
