But so far are the Town of the Horse and the Dragon Mound
From this our house, from these walls and Han Gardens,
That the moon takes my heart to the Tartar sky.
I have woven in the frame endless words of my grieving...
Yet this petal-bough is smiling now on my lonely sleep.
...Oh, ask General Tou when his flags will come home
And his triumph be carved on the rock of Yen-jan Mountain!
With merry songs the orioles and swallows announce New Year, Yet how many thousand miles away do border towns lie? I live in the towered city near the royal palace, My heart now chases the silver moon to the foemen's sky. At the lonely loom I weave into silken fabrics endless woes, And the spray in the boudoir smiles at me in solitary bed lying, Oh General Doutao, thou commander of most valiant men, When wilt thou return with banners proudly flying? A new year's announced as swallows chatter and orioles cry ─ But thousands of miles away Ma-yi and Long-du lie. My home's in the capital next to the Imperial Garden of Han ─ But my heart has gone with the moon to the barbarian sky. The brocade poems reveal everlasting regret; Flowers laugh at me as I sleep alone on high. I'd ask General Don of the cavalry, When will victory be carved on Mt Yanran and the homecoming banners fly? |
