My heritage lost through disorder and famine, My brothers and sisters flung eastward and westward, My fields and gardens wrecked by the war, My own flesh and blood become scum of the street, I moan to my shadow like a lone-wandering wildgoose, I am torn from my root like a water-plant in autumn: I gaze at the moon, and my tears run down For hearts, in five places, all sick with one wish.
The times are hard, the seasons waste, and industry is dead. And brothers widely parted, to east and west are sped. The wasted fields and gardens show where war-borne havoc passed. Our flesh and blood is scattered far along the wayside cast. Their shades that wail from middle air like wild geese sail on high. Their roots uptorn, like thistle-down they flit along the sky. But when the same bright moon they see, their tears flow down like rain. They gladly with the night would flee back to their home again.

An empty house, its garden overgrown, Its fields now fallow; the family blown Thence by civil strife and hunger's need, Like stray geese or tumble-weed, Differently dispersed by an indifferent wind, Autumn, leaf-fall; five far roofs; withiin, One night, one grief, one self-same love Of a lost home; and one moon, full above.
