Snow is white on the westward mountains and on three forti-fied towns,
And waters in this southern lake flash on a long bridge.
But wind and dust from sea to sea bar me from my brothers;
And I cannot help crying, I am so far away.
I have nothing to expect now but the ills of old age.
I am of less use to my country than a grain of dust.
I ride out to the edge of town. I watch on the horizon,
Day after day, the chaos of the world.
The three fortified cities hug the snowy West Ranges in a rank; The Far Reaching Bridge strides across the river along South Bank. The chaos of war disperse my younger brothers here and there; At the end of the world I am shedding my lonely tears. I can only sacrifice my declining years to illness, And have nothing yet to requite the Emperor's kindness. Riding in the suburbs from time to time I gaze far away; I can't bear the prospects of my country dimming day by day! All my declining years will provide is plenty of ill health ‒ I haven’t the slightest thing to proffer to the imperial court. Sometimes, riding my horse out of town, I look out as far as I can, Unable to endure the way that things grow daily bleaker. Under the snowy West Mount, the three towns are heavily guarded; Across the Clear River from the south shore, the Myriad Mile Bridge is seen to extend. Separated from my younger brothers by turmoil all over the country, I'm shedding tears from afar at the world's end. Not the slightest have I contributed to the Imperial Court: Aging, my declining years much sickness would attend. At times I ride to the countryside for a distant view: How unbearable, the situation's on a downward trend. |
