In a sharp gale from the wide sky apes are whimpering,
Birds are flying homeward over the clear lake and white sand,
Leaves are dropping down like the spray of a waterfall,
While I watch the long river always rolling on.
I have come three thousand miles away. Sad now with autumn
And with my hundred years of woe, I climb this height alone.
Ill fortune has laid a bitter frost on my temples,
Heart-ache and weariness are a thick dust in my wine.
The wind so fresh, the sky so high Awake the gibbons' wailing cry. The isles clear cut, the sand so white, Arrest the wheeling seagulls' flight. Through endless Space with rustling sound The falling leaves are whirled around. Beyond my ken a yeasty sea The Yangtze's waves are rolling free. From far away, in Autumn drear, I find myself a stranger here. With dragging years and illness wage Lone war upon this lofty stage. With troubles vexed and trials sore My locks are daily growing hoar: Till Time, before whose steps I pine, Set down this failing cup of wine! The wind so fresh, the sky so high Awake the gibbons' wailing cry. The isles clear cut, the sand so white, Arrest the wheeling seagulls' flight. The boundless forest sheds its leaves shower by shower; The endless River rolls its waves hour after hour. Far from home in autumn, I'm grieved to see my plight; After my long illness, I climb alone this height. Living in hard times, at my frosted hair I pine; Pressed by poverty, I give up my cup of wine. From heaven high the winds are whirling down with monkey's whine, And over the white sanded hursts the birds are cleaving fine. The boundless forests shed their yellow leaves with rustles; The everflowing Yangtze on its way rolls and wrestles. Autumn is chilling me — always a thousand-miles-roamer, Alone mounting the mountain, and a lifelong sufferer. I deeply loathe my rime-like temples as in these hard times; Of late Senility yet forces me to give up wines! The wind blows hard, the sky is high, the apes wail mournfully; The island is clean, the sand is white, above it the birds wheel round. The falling leaves of the boundless woods drop down withered and cold; Endlessly the Yangzi River comes swirling and rolling along. I travel on for thousands of miles through the sad autumn days; Plagued with the sickness of many decades, I climb the tower alone. With these hard times and my bitter regrets, I’m growing more frosty hair, Dejected now that I’ve given up drinking my rough-brewed ale. Sharp is the wind under a high sky amid the gibbons'howls of woe; Pure is the islet and its white sand with birds flying above to and fro. Boundless is the forest where leaves rustle and fall; Endless is the Yangtze that comes rolling down with its powerful flow. Ten thousand miles from home and saddened in autumn, often I travel; One hundred years plagued with sickness, alone up the terrace I go. Hardships, sufferings and regrets have added frost to my temples; Disappointed and unsuccessful in life, lately drinking I've to forgo. Vast sky, sharp wind, and the gibbons wailing sadly the white sand on the island looks fresh birds are wheeling above it everywhere the trees are silently shedding leaves and the long river, ceaselessly comes churning and rushing on how often in autumn I've stood a sad traveler, far from home dogged by my lifelongs sickness I slowly climb this terrace so many sorrows and regrets have helped to frost my hair but now, what's even worse I've had to give up wine! |
