SENT as a present from Annam —
A red cockatoo.
Coloured like the peach-tree blossom,
Speaking with the speech of men.
And they did to it what is always done
To the learned and eloquent.
They took a cage with stout bars
And shut it up inside.
A red cockatoo Came from far Annam. Its color Is like peach blossoms, And it speaks With a human voice. They have done to it What men ever do To the wise and the learned And the clever of speech: They have imprisoned it Behind the bars of a cage. When will it ever Be free? |
