The washerman's bat resounds afar,
And the autumn breeze sighs tenderly.
But my heart has gone to the Tartar war,
To bleak Kansuh and the steppes of snow,

In Chang’an under a strip of moon You hear them pounding clothes in countless homes. The autumn wind is blowing without end; My love is fully fixed on Jade Gate pass. When will the Tartar foe be brought to heel, So my man can end his fighting far away? |
