"I would not have thee grudge those robes which gleam in rich array,
But I would have thee grudge the hours of youth which glide away.
Go, pluck the blooming flower betimes, lest when thou com'st again
Alas! upon the withered stem no blooming flowers remain!"
Love not your golden dress, I pray, More than your youthful golden hours! Gather sweet flowers while you may, And not the twig devoid of flowers! $(Kind)$ sir, I urge you not to cherish a gown with golden threads; I urge you instead to cherish in full these youthful days of yours. When flowers bloom you should break them off, break them off when you can; Don’t wait till the flowers have gone to break off a branch in vain. |
