THE World cheats those who cannot read;
I, happily, have mastered script and pen.
The World cheats those who hold no office;
I am blessed with high official rank.
The old are often ill;
I, at this day have not an ache or pain.
They are often burdened with ties;
But I have finished with marriage and giving in marriage.
No changes happen to jar the quiet of my mind;
No business comes to impair the vigour of my limbs.
Hence it is that now for ten years
Body and soul have rested in hermit peace.
And all the more, in the last lingering years
What I shall need are very few things.
A single rug to warm me through the winter;
One meal to last me the whole day.
It does not matter that my house is rather small;
One cannot sleep in more than one room!
It does not matter that I have not many horses;
One cannot ride in two coaches at once!
As fortunate as me among the people of the world
Possibly one would find seven out of ten.
As contented as me among a hundred men
Look as you may, you will not find one.
In the affairs of others even fools are wise;
In their own business even sages err.
To no one else would I dare to speak my heart,
So my wild words are addressed to my nephews and nieces.
The world looks down on the illiterate, I was favored from the first With dedication to the writing brush. The great world looks down on common men, But I've been blessed with official rank. Many men on aging experience sickness and pain, But, luckily, I'm free from all ailments. Many in their age experience anxiety and care, But I have now completed my marital obligations. My heart's at ease with no disturbing emotions. My body at peace with no encumbrances. This is why for ten years Body and spirit have idled and enjoyed themselves. My wants for old age ahead are few. I've a warm robe for winter, Sure of a good meal to see me through the day. Don't say my house is small; All I need is one room for sleep. What's the use for many horses? Who can ride two steeds at once? Why worry? Good bodily health Is shared by seven men in ten, But true satisfaction at heart Not by one in a hundred! You may look on others as foolish But yourself often go astray. I don't dare discuss this with strangers, So I show these wild words to my nieces. The world looks down on the illiterate but I was dedicated to the writing brush. And the world looks down on non-officials but I was favored with official ranks. Men get old much sickness and pain but luckily I'm now ailment free. Men get old much worry and care but I've now completed the marital obligations. Heart at ease no shifts in feeling, body at peace no encumbrances. That is why for ten years frame and spirit idle and pleasured. The old age years right there before me and few the things I want. A warm fur robe for the winter, a good meal to get me through the day. Don't say my home's small for all I need is one room for sleep. What's the use of many horses? Can you ride two steeds at the same time? My body of abundant fortune is shared by seven men in ten but my heart of satisfaction? In a hundred not one! You can look upon others as foolish but in your own course often you'll lose the wise. I don't dare discuss this with others so these wild words are shown to my nieces. |
