SINCE I lay ill, how long has passed?
Almost a hundred heavy-hanging days.
The maids have learnt to gather my medicine-herbs;
The dog no longer barks when the doctor comes.
The jars in my cellar are plastered deep with mould;
My singers’ carpets are half crumbled to dust.
How can I bear, when the Earth renews her light,
To watch from a pillow the beauty of Spring unfold?
SINCE I lay ill, how long has passed? Almost a hundred heavy-hanging days. The maids have learnt to gather my medicine-herbs; The dog no longer barks when the doctor comes. The jars in my cellar are plastered deep with mould; My singers' carpets are half crumbled to dust. How can I bear, when the Earth renews her light, To watch from a pillow the beauty of Spring unfold? SINCE I lay ill, how long has passed? Almost a hundred heavy-hanging days. The maids have learnt to gather my medicine-herbs; The dog no longer barks when the doctor comes. The jars in my cellar are plastered deep with mould; My singers' carpets are half crumbled to dust. How can I bear, when the Earth renews her light, To watch from a pillow the beauty of Spring unfold? How long have I been lying sick? I've been worrying about my condition Almost a hundred days! The maid now easily finds the book of herbs, The dog no longer barks at the doctor. The wine-jug, alas, has got moss on it. The banquet mats are half covered with dust. I still have fine scenery around me But how can I enjoy it Or face the spring from my pillow? How long have I been lying sick? Worry pending almost a hundred days! The maid can search out the medical book, the dog no longer barks at the doctor. The wine jug's got moss all over it, the banquet mats half covered with dust. I still love a fine scene but how to face the spring from my pillow? |
