FROM ten thousand mountain ravines trees blend with the sky,
From a thousand hills the nightjars are calling;
In the depths of the hills it rains all night long
From the tops of the trees a hundred little rivulets.
$((Where you are in office))$ the ladies of Han pay tribute with Tung cloth,
And the men of Pa litigate over their potato patches.
Wên, an old man in a foreign land, taught the people
Will you not dare to follow in the footsteps of the men of old?
From ten thousand valleys the trees touch heaven; On a thousand peaks cuckoos are calling; And, after a night of mountain rain, From each summit come hundreds of silken cascades. ... If girls are asked in tribute the fibre they weave, Or farmers quarrel over taro fields, Preside as wisely as Wên-wêng did.... Is fame to be only for the ancients? From ten thousand valleys the trees touch heaven; On a thousand peaks cuckoos are calling; And, after a night of mountain rain, From each summit come hundreds of silken cascades. ... If girls are asked in tribute the fibre they weave, Or farmers quarrel over taro fields, Preside as wisely as Wên-wêng did.... Is fame to be only for the ancients? In endless valleys trees reaching to the sky In numberless hills the call of cuckoos And in those hills half is all rain Streaming off branches to multiply the springs- The native women will bring in local cloth The men will bring you actions about potato fields Your revered predecessor reformed their ways And will you be so bold as to repudiate him? In countless valleys trees soar to the skies; A thousand peaks resound with cuckoos' cries. A heavy rain in the mountains all night Brings cascades from the tree-tops on the height. With "tong" flower cloth Han women pay tribute; On taro fields Ba people may dispute. Instruct the people like the ancient sage! Is glory only for the bygone age? |
