I HAVE heard it said that at the frontier defences of Huang-lung
Year after year there is no soldier's leave;
Yet the (self-same) moon that shines on our women's apart-ments
Shines without ceasing also in the camp of Han.
While the young wife thinks of love,
Her good man yesterday evening thought of her.
Oh! who will advance the drums and flags and take that dragon city?
Against the City of the Yellow Dragon Our troops were sent long years ago, And girls here watch the same melancholy moon That lights our Chinese warriors— And young wives dream a dream of spring, That last night their heroic husbands, In a great attack, with flags and drums, Captured the City of the Yellow Dragon. The Warden of Huang-lung, at least so I hear, His soldiers disbands not for year after year. The moon of the harem, alas! and alas! Is destined in barracks its lifetime to pass. To-day in her passion the maiden wife burns. Sweet dream to her husband of past joy returns. Oh! who will the drums and the standards advance, Deliver this City to music and dance? We hear about our garrison at Yellow Dragon Fort, For years the soldiers have been detained to guard the frontier. Lonely women, watching the moon in chambers, fall in thought, The same moon that into men's barricks shines round the year. Young wives ought to feel merry and happy when springtime comes, Yet, sad thoughts of their husbands' departure keep coming back. Alas, who could lead our army with flying flags and war drums, To take enemy stronghold in one single attack? |
