AS I stay at the inn alone
My fancy runs in a sad vein.
In the cold light of the lamp I think of old days
(The cry of) a stray goose disturbs my melancholy sleep,
Dreams of my distant home steal the morning hours.
The family letters come only at intervals of years
Yet o'er the breadth of the river moon and mist are beautiful,
And at the gate of the inn I see a fisherman has tied up his boat.
Solitary at the tavern, I am shut in with loneliness and grief. Under the cold lamp, I brood on the past; I am kept awake by a lost wildgoose. ... Roused at dawn from a misty dream, I read, a year late, news from home— And I remember the moon like smoke on the river And a fisher-boat moored there, under my door. Roused at dawn from a misty dream, I read, a year late, news from home— And I remember the moon like smoke on the river And a fisher-boat moored there, under my door. Solitary at an inn was I staying When a deep melancholy o'er me stole. In the light flick'ring my past did unroll. From sleep I was roused by a wild goose straying. Dawn broke my dream as homeward I was flying And letters thence took a year on the way. In the dim moonlight on the river grey At a gate was a fisherman's boat lying. There are no fine fellows for company at the inn $(So)$ I settle into a quiet, lonely mood. I think of things past by the cold light of the lamp; A stray wild goose disturbs my despondent sleep. When it’s close to dawn I dream of far away, Of going home – no letters from there for a year. On the blue-black river, a splendid moon in the mist, And a fishing boat that’s tied to the gate outside. |
