TO think, my master, you wandered about derelict through a whole age,
Yet this place is still the District City of Tsou.
Though your home was made the palace of the King of Lu
The pitying phœnix lamented your frustration;
When you grieved for the unicorn you were repining at the failure of your own teaching.
When I look now at the sacrifice between the two pillars
Can it be that ill-omened sacrifice you dreamed of long ago?
