ONE generation gives way to another,
The future becomes the present and present merges with the past,
Rivers and hills alone preserve their famous features
And here are we once more come to trace them.
The water is low and round "Fish Weir" Island runs shallow
In cold weather the "Dream Pool" is deep;
Yang's monument is still there,
When one has read the inscription tears wet one's clothes.
While worldly matters take their turn, Ancient, modern, to and fro, Rivers and mountains are changeless in their glory And still to be witnessed from this trail. ... Where a fisher-boat dips by a waterfall, Where the air grows colder, deep in the valley, The monument of Yang remains; And we have wept, reading the words. In Nature's bosom remains the historical site; My friends and I now in our turn climb to the height. The ebb tide exposes the shallow Kiddle Shoal; Dream Marsh appears to be deeper when winds grow raw. The monument to Lord Yang still stands, and I lament When reading the inscription and tears wet my garment. Human lives succeed each other and decay, They come and go, becoming past and present. Rivers and mountains keep their scenic beauty; We, too, climb up to have a look. The water level sinks, the fishing sluice is shallow; The weather is cold, Lake Meng-tse is deep. Lord Yang's pillar is still here, After we read it, tears soak our robes. |
