IN the eighth month the waters of the lake are smooth
Enveloping the void they merge into the sky;
Vapour rises from the Yün-mêng Tsê
In the ripples tremble the reflections of Yo-yang city.
I wish to cross but there is no boat nor oar to take me;
Idling with no fixed purpose I am ashamed to think of the men of old.
I sit and enjoy the fishermen, how I admire that fishing feeling?
Here in the Eighth-month the waters of the lake Are of a single air with heaven, And a mist from the Yun and Mêng valleys Has beleaguered the city of Yo-chou. I should like to cross, but I can find no boat. ... How ashamed I am to be idler than you statesmen, As I sit here and watch a fisherman casting And emptily envy him his catch. In the eighth moon the lake is full to the brim; The limpid vastness melts into Heaven's rim. While vapours all over Cloud-Dream Marsh up roll, Bores roar ahead to rock Yueyang City wall. I yearn to cross, yet no boat's waiting for me; It's golden age and I sense shame to this retreat I flee. Sitting to watch those anglers with satisfied looks, I can only feel envious of their heavy hooks. |
