SINCE long ago the ancient tower has fallen into decay Going to it in the autumn it makes me think of the days gone by. Few pilgrims climb to these crumbling ruins, Cloud capped precipices brood across deep waters, The setting sun lingers upon old piled up stones. A cold shiver runs through the empty woods; Sadly my thoughts dwell on the relics of the southern dynasty Only the long river flows on as before.
As the seasons have dealt with this ancient terrace, So autumn breaks my homesick heart.... Few pilgrims venture climbing to a temple so wild, Up from the lake, in the mountain clouds. ... Sunset clings in the old defences, A stone gong shivers through the empty woods. ... Of the Southern Dynasty, what remains? Nothing but the great River.

When shaken down yon ancient tower, It fell in Autumn's dreary power. To this wild temple rarely stray $(By chance some wanderers from the way,)$ Where, far across wide waters deep, To heaven mist-hung mountains sweep. 0 The lonely woods chill crystals fill With plaintive 0 $(music from the rill)$. Alone the constant Yangtze's flow Yet mourns that kingdom's overthrow.

Feeling sadly nostalgic, I stand On this ancient terrace in autumn bleak. To the remote temple few visitors come; Across the water looms the cloud-hidden peak. The setting sun lingering on the ruined ramparts; The chillling qing resounds in the forest air. Gone for ever are the stories of the Southern Dynasties, But the Long River flows on, now as e'er.
