DIGNITY and majesty still pervade this place; Here for a thousand autumns (mankind) has stood in awe. His power split the land in three; Once more he re-established the glories of Han, With the aid of his great minister he was able to establish his kingdom, He bore children but none who could compare with himself. (The time came when) the former dancing girls of Shu, dismissed and ruined, Went to dance before the palaces of Wei.
Even in this world the spirit of a hero Lives and reigns for thousands of years. You were the firmest of the pot's three legs; It was you who maintained the honour of the currency; You chose a great premier to magnify your kingdom ... And yet you had a son so little like his father That girls of your country were taken captive To dance in the palace of the King of Wêi.

The spirit of each fiery soul A thousand autumns have not tamed. Your power split in three the whole. You made the coinage five-fold named. By worthy servants helped, the land Strong were your hands to civilize. Declined your children! Of that band Not one who with your virtues vies Before the falling Hall of Wei One ancient nautch-girl comes to-day, Alone to dance in dreary guise.

A hero he was! In Cathay, he had no peers. His lasting name will survive all the passing years. Among the Three Kingdoms, his had the mightiest reign; Our land's ancient glory, he strove hard to regain. Prestige earned him a wise premier, prop of the state; Time left his throne to a frail son, the will of fate. Sadly the captive girls came to dance for the foe, While his son drank by, sensing not the sign of woe.
