THE well-disciplined guard put up their spears
In the official guest chamber there is a pleasant fragrance (of cooked foods);
Wind and rain drive across the water
But we are at ease in a cool room that overlooks the lake.
Worry and fear have now been banished
My honoured guests once more crowd my hall,
For myself I feel ashamed of living here so extravagantly
While I think of my people in want.
But let us smother these twinges of conscience
And follow our natural bent.
Fresh meats are not in season
But vegetables and fruit are here to be tasted,
Deign to drink a cup of wine
While I will listen attentively to the recitation of poems.
If the spirit is happy the body feels light
I want to mount on the wings of the wind.
Soochow is the home of all the scholars.
A great wave of culture has spread itself here
How can it be said that the confines of this great state
Rest on wealth and might alone.
Outside are insignia, shown in state; But here are sweet incense-clouds, quietly ours. Wind and rain, coming in from sea, Have cooled this pavilion above the lake And driven the feverish heat away From where my eminent guests are gathered. ... Ashamed though I am of my high position While people lead unhappy lives, Let us reasonably banish care And just be friends, enjoying nature. Though we have to go without fish and meat, There are fruits and vegetables aplenty. ... We bow, we take our cups of wine, We give our attention to beautiful poems. When the mind is exalted, the body is lightened And feels as if it could float in the wind. ... Su-chou is famed as a centre of letters; And all you writers, coming here, Prove that the name of a great land Is made by better things than wealth. Guards on watch, with ranks of halberds bright; Guest rooms are fragrant with scent not in sight. While wind and rain sweep from beyond the sea, In this cool place we find ourselves carefree. With ailments and vexations lately ended, Distinguished guests are here once more befriended. Ashamed as I am to own this splendid house, When people still have not enough to browse, Good sense, let's hope, will silence grumbling voices, Broad mind at this convivial rejoices. Although no fish or meat at table is served, Yet fruit and greens for all are here reserved. Let's come and drink a cup of blissful wine, And hear a reading of verses divine. A joyful spirit makes the body light, One feels as if, wind-borne, to fly on height. Wu State is famed for poets and wise men, Here, what a brilliant group who wield the pen! Let's prove the name of a great commonwealth Is made by better things than worldly wealth. Military guards and rows o painted halberds the purest of perfumes in the inner rooms and wind and rain fresh from the sea cooling the lakeside pavilion where the lounge troubles and ills have lately been dispersed noble guests fill the hall once more I'm embarrassed to live in such splendor having yet to examine the condition of the people but understanding reason we banish right and wrong understanding life we transcend the wold of form despite the seasonal ban on fish and meat vegetables and fruits are ours to enjoy we bend down and drink cups of wine we look up and hear noble words with our spirits pleased and our bodies relaxed our hopes soar on the breeze the history of letters in the land of Wu is rich its accomplished scholars are legion now that I've seen this tributary state how can I call it the Revenue Frontier |
