FOR the whole year I have been cooped up in my office;
Now outside the walls the country lies silent in the dawn.
The wind sighs quietly in the willows,
The blue hills calm my thoughts.
Amidst leafy boughs I pass the hours
Or pace the banks of a mountain stream.
A gentle rain veils the fragrant plain
Whence is the spring turtle dove calling?
I love this peace but can seldom attain it,
Those who follow the world must hurry their footsteps.
In the end I will give up my post and here build my hut
Henceforth to imitate the example of Tao Yüan-ming.
From office confinement all year long, I have come out of town to be free this morning Where willows harmonize the wind And green hills lighten the cares of the world. I lean by a tree and rest myself Or wander up and down a stream. ... Mists have wet the fragrant meadows; A spring dove calls from some hidden place. ... With quiet surroundings, the mind is at peace, But beset with affairs, it grows restless again ... Here I shall finally build me a cabin, As T'ao Ch'ien built one long ago. Confined year long to office chambers close, I greet the country for its morning air. Gentle breezes caress the waving willows; The verdant hills becalm my grief and care. Against the bush I rest and take my ease, Or to and fro I stroll along the stream. A dewy drizzle veils the scenting plains; O say from where the throstle's trills do gleam! My duties check the heart's delight for ease; On joys I can but one brief hour employ. Yet soon or late, I'll rig up here a hut, And live a life that Tao would love t'enjoy! Stuck in an office all year I left the city for the wide-open dawn where willow catkins soothed the wind and blue mountains stilled my cares where everything green put me at ease where I followed a stream and followed it back where a light rain covered a flowering plain and spring doves were calling unseen I keep suppressing my love of seclusion I'm invariably busy at work but someday I'll retire and build a hut here to be like Old T'ao would be sweet |
