THROUGHOUT the world beauty is a snare to men How could Hsi Shih long remain in obscurity? In the morning she was (washing clothes) by the river of Yüeh, In the evening she was a palace concubine of the King of Wu. When she was obscure how could she shine among the crowd? When the hour of greatness came Then at last her rare beauty was valued by men; Attendants at her bidding wait on her with fragrant ointments She no longer has to put on her own clothes, Sunning herself in her sovereign's smile her airs and graces grow apace. In the Prince's eyes she can do no wrong Her erstwhile comrades of the wash-tub cannot ride home with her in the same chair. The daughters of neighbours must have it politely pointed out to them That although they copy her frowns what hope have they?
Since beauty is honoured all over the Empire, How could Hsi Shih remain humbly at home?— Washing clothes at dawn by a southern lake— And that evening a great lady in a palace of the north: Lowly one day, no different from the others, The next day exalted, everyone praising her. No more would her own hands powder her face Or arrange on her shoulders a silken robe. And the more the King loved her, the lovelier she looked, Blinding him away from wisdom. ... Girls wto had once washed silk beside her Were kept at a distance from her chariot. And none of the girls in her neighbours' houses By pursing their brows could copy her beauty.
As Beauty is of all the world admired, Obscurity no longer her could hide. That morn a maiden washing by the brook: That eve a Prince's bride. In humble state how different from the rest? When Fortune came they noted her how rare. Attendants then she had to tire her hair, And aiding hands arranged her silken vest. Her Lord's love sought to aid her beauty fair: In her all flaw his tenderness would hide. THe comrades who were washing by her side Might not attend her in her chariot there. When she their busy offices declined, They, that they could not frown like her, repined.
As all the world thinks highly of Beauty, Could Xi Shi live long in obscurity? The morn saw her by Ruoye Stream a lass; A concubine in the night in Wu's Palace. Any different from others when one's low staying? Rarities are noted when outstanding! She beckoned maids to deck her face and tress, And never by herself donned a silk dress. She became pamper'd more, being doted on, And the King himself knew not right from wrong. Lasses washing gauze with her in days of yore Could not come now in the same coach with her. To her plain vicinage it must be known – Not try to imitate her charming frown!
