IN the old days I saw you at the palace of the Prince of Ch’i,
And I often heard you before the halls of Ts'ui Chiu.
South of the Yangtze it is still peaceful and the scenery is good,
And now in the time of falling blossoms I meet you once again.
I met you often when you were visiting princes And when you were playing in noblemen's halls. ... Spring passes.... Far down the river now, I find you alone under falling petals. At the palatial residence we often met; In Courtier's Hall for many times I heard you sing. The Southern scenery is now not to forget, But I meet you again when flowers part with spring. I saw you now and then in Prince Qi's house, And heard your songs in Courtier Cui's grand rooms. When sights are fine in the Land of the South, I meet you again in a shower of blooms. I often used to see you in the residence of Prince Qi, $(And)$ heard you several times in the hall of Cui the Ninth. South of the Yangzi the scenery is truly quite fine ‒ $(And here)$ I meet you again, in the season of falling blossoms. |
