LOOKING from the terrace of the Immortals into fairyland The air and the scenery are cold and clear after last night's rain. At evening the colour of the hills stretches out to the distant trees of Ch'in, The noise of washing tells us that autumn has come to the palaces of Han. The chequered shadows of the pines fall upon the surface of empty altars, The fragrant grasses of autumn penetrate the small grottoes (of the monastery): Why need you seek (for a paradise) outside the world? Here among men there is also a Cinnabar Hill.
Down below the Immortals’ Terrace we see the fabled towers; It is a bleak and chilly scene as days of rain come to an end. Mountain colours meet far away with the twilit woods of Qin; Washing being pounded nearby means ifs autumn in the palace. Shadows from scanty pines fall on silent, empty altars, And the scent of scattered grass pervades their dim little recesses. Where is the need to go far off in search of another world When here among men there is to be sure a Cinnabar Hill as well?
