IN the second month the yellow orioles appear in the "upper Woods," In the spring dawn the imperial city is dark $((with foliage))$; In the palace of "Unending Bliss" the sound of bells fades away beyond the flowers, At the "dragon pool" the colour of the willows is deeper from the $((spring))$ rains. But even the softness of spring cannot dissipate my grief at reaching the end of my career. As stars support the sun so have I never swerved from my loyalty to the throne. Here am I who has offered up my poems for ten years and still without success; I am ashamed with my white hair to face you with your official hat-pins.
Finches flash yellow through the Imperial Grove Of the Forbidden City, pale with spring dawn; Flowers muffle a bell in the Palace of Bliss And rain has deepened the Dragon Lake willows; But spring is no help to a man bewildered, Who would be like a cloud upholding the Light of Heaven, Yet whose poems, ten years refused, are shaming These white hairs held by the petalled pin.
Th'imperial garden amid golden orioles' song awakes In the forbidden city, sombre in early spring morn. The boom of the bell dies away after through flowers it breaks. The willows by the pool sway in the rain, dark and forlorn. And nothing, not e'en the warm sun, could thaw my bitter pain, Yet true and loyal to the emp'ror shall I always be. For years, alas, I've sent my writings to court all in vain, And white-haired now, I'm mortified your regalia to see.
