WHEN Wang Chün's high-decked war junks came down from Yi Chou
There was an end to the royal majesty of Chin-ling.
A thousand chains fell to the bottom of the river,
A single flag of surrender came out of the rocky headland.
How often does one look back with regret on the events of the past?
Yet the mountain passes are as before and lie athwart the cold flowing river;
To-day the four seas have become one family,
And the old forts all deserted are overgrown with autumn reeds.
Since Wang Chün brought his towering ships down from Yi-chou, The royal ghost has pined in the city of Nan-king. Ten thousand feet of iron chain were sunk here to the bottom— And then came the flag of surrender on the Wall of Stone.... Cycles of change have moved into the past, While still this mountain dignity has commanded the cold river; And now comes the day of the Chinese world united, And the old forts fill with ruin and with autumn reeds. Down from the west sailed General Wang Jun's ships of war, Reducing Jinling's majesty to gloominess. In river bed were sunk the chains guarding the shore, On Stone Wall waved flags of surrender is distress. How often are we touched by events of past days! The mountain's image is still pillowed on cold waves. The four seas are united now under the royal sway, Old forts are buried 'mid autumn reeds and old graves. |
