Alas for the lonely plant that grows beside the river bed,
While the mango-bird screams loud and long from the tall tree overhead!
Full with the freshets of the spring, the torrent rushes on;
The ferry-boat swings idly, for the ferryman is gone.
I LOVE to gaze alone at the dark grasses growing beside the river, When the orioles are calling in the thick woods. The spring tides come down swiftly swollen by the rains, By the deserted ferry the boat swings to and fro. Where tender grasses rim the stream And deep boughs trill with mango-birds, On the spring flood of last night's rain The ferry-boat moves as though someone were poling. I sorrow for the reeds that grow beside the stream, Above the shady bowers yellow orioles sing. Though swiftly flows the freshet with the vernal tides, My ferryboat, unmanned, must idly turn and swing. I LOVE to gaze alone at the dark grasses growing beside the river, When the orioles are calling in the thick woods. The spring tides come down swiftly swollen by the rains, By the deserted ferry the boat swings to and fro. Alone I like the riverside where green grass grows And golden orioles sing amid the leafy trees. With spring showers at dusk the river overflows, A lonely boat athwart the ferry floats at ease. I love unnoticed plants that grow beside a stream orioles singing overhead somewhere in the trees at dusk the current quickens fed by springtime rains I pull myself across on an unmanned country ferry |
