The setting sun shines low upon my door
Ere dusk enwraps the river fringed with spring ;
Sweet perfumes rise from gardens by the shore,
And smoke, where crews their boats to anchor bring.
Now twittering birds are roosting in the bower,
And flying insects fill the air around...
O wine, who gave to thee thy subtle power? —
A thousand cares in one small goblet drowned!
"The setting sun shines low upon my door Ere dusk enwraps the river fringed with spring; Sweet perfumes rise from gardens by the shore, And smoke, where creaws their boats to anchor bring. "Now twittering birds are roosting in the bower, And flying insects full the air around.... O wine, who gave to thee thy subtle power? A thousand cares in one small goblet drowned" Sunset glitters on the beads Of the curtains. Spring flowers Bloom in the valley. The gardens Along the river are filled With perfume. Smoke of cooking Fires drifts over the slow barges. Sparrows hop and tumble in The branches. Whirling insects Swarm in the air. Who discovered That one cup of thick wine Will dispel a thousand cares? The curtain-hooks were gilt as sunset sank. Springtide along the torrents turns to gloom. Wafts from green shores yon gardens' sweet perfume. The gatherers of fuel, their meal to cook, Have stayed their vessel on a sandy bank. The shrieking birds that fight to settle there Fall down. And all about the garden—look! — A cloud of insects flying in the air. Oh! muddy lees of wine! —who made you so That one deep draught will scatter all my woe? The setting sunlight clings to the screen-hook; Serenity reigns all round the spring brook. The fragrance emanates from the planted strands; The boatmen moor and cook foods on the sands. The birds bicker for and spring on the sprigs; The courtyard is swarmed with ephemerids. Who has invented the opaque liquor? A thoustand cares might be melted in a beaker. |
