My home is girdled by a limpid stream,
And there in summer days life's movements pause,
Save where some swallow flits from beam to beam,
And the wild sea-gull near and nearer draws.
The goodwife rules a paper board for chess;
The children beat a fish-hook out of wire;
My ailments call for physic more or less,
What else should this poor frame of mine require?
THE river makes a bend and encircles the village with its current. All the long Summer, the affairs and occupations of the river village are quiet and simple. The swallows who nest in the beams go and come as they please. The gulls in the middle of the river enjoy one another, they crowd together and touch one another. My old wife paints a chess-board on paper. My little sons hammer needles to make fish-hooks. I have many illnesses, therefore my only necessities are medicines; Besides these, what more can so humble a man as I ask? The lucid river swerves and holds the village in its arm; In these long summer days the rural life here is all calm. Swallows come freely in and out of the hall of my cottage, While gulls snuggle to each other on the water's floatage. Lining a paper chequer my wife bends over her work; Knocking a needle my son is making a fishing hook. A martyr to illness, what I want is medicines; What else should I seek for my humble being other than these things? The river curves to flow around our village which holds a secret beauty on these long summer days the swallows come and go among the eaves and rafeters floating, flocked together gulls sit on the water my wife creates a chessboard drawing it on the paper our sons make fishhooks bending some old needles somtimes when I am sick I may require medicine, but that is really all this humble person needs. |
