For my betters — my office resigned — I make way,
And seek with the wine-cup to shorten the day.
You ask for the friends who once thronged in my hall;
Alas! with my place they have gone, one and all.
To worthier hands I leave the rule of state, T'enjoy my wine and while my time away. Of those who once came crowding at the gate A few may now appear at early day. |
