A fair girl draws the blind aside
And sadly sits with drooping head;
I see her burning tear-drops glide
But know not why those tears are shed.
BEAUTIFUL is this woman who rolls up the pearl-reed blind. She sits in an inner chamber, And her eyebrows, delicate as a moth’s antennæ, Are drawn with grief. One sees only the wet lines of tears. For whom does she suffer this misery? We do not know. How beautiful she looks, opening the pearly casement, And how quiet she leans, and how troubled her brow is! You may see the tears now, bright on her cheek, But not the man she so bitterly loves. How beautiful she looks, opening the pearly casement, And how quiet she leans, and how troubled her brow is! You may see the tears now, bright on her cheek, But not the man she so bitterly loves. My lady has rolled up the curtains of pearl, And sits with a frown on her eyebrows apart. Wet traces of tears can be seen as they curl. But who knows for whom is the grief in her heart? My lady has rolled up the curtains of pearl, And sits with a frown on her eyebrows apart. Wet traces of tears can be seen as they curl. But who knows for whom is the grief in her heart? A lady fair uprolls the screen, With eyebrows knit she waits in vain Wet stains of tears can still be seen. Who, heartless, has caused her the pain? A lovely woman rolls up a pearl curtain Then sits for an age with a fine knitted brow. All we see are the wet traces of her tears; We do not know who she feels remorse for. |
