IN this golden age there are none that flee official life,
Talent and intelligence show themselves at court;
And so it came about that you, a stranger from the Eastern hills,
Left your herb gathering (and came to court),
On your arrival at the distant gold doors (of the capital),
Who could say that your principles would not find employment?
You came from the country of the Yangtze and the Huai at the time of the feast of the spring equinox,
And in the capital you had to mend your spring clothes.
We pledge you with wine on the road from Ch‘ang-an.
A friend dear to my heart goes on his way.
You must now float away on your cinnamon boat.
Soon you will arrive at your country retreat.
The distant forests will lead you on your way.
(From afar) you will see this lonely city gleaming in the rays of the setting sun.
Although I schemed and unhappily they failed to employ you,
Think not that your good qualities are entirely unappreciated.
In a happy reign there should be no hermits; The wise and able should consult together.... So you, a man of the eastern mountains, Gave up your life of picking herbs And came all the way to the Gate of Gold— But you found your devotion unavailing. ... To spend the Day of No Fire on one of the southern rivers, You have mended your spring clothes here in these northern cities. I pour you the farewell wine as you set out from the capital— Soon I shall be left behind here by my bosom-friend. In your sail-boat of sweet cinnamon-wood You will float again toward your own thatch door, Led along by distant trees To a sunset shining on a far-away town. ... What though your purpose happened to fail, Doubt not that some of us can hear high music. The distant trees will point the way as you go; The lonely city sits in the evening glow. When your good purpose has happened to fail you, Bethink you not that your intimate friends are few! |

聖天子（せいてんし）の御代（ごだい）に野（の）に隠（かく）れ住（す）む賢人（けんじん）はなくて、天下（てんか）の英才（えいさい）は当然（とうぜん）すべて朝廷（ちょうてい）に集（あつ）まって来（き）た。そこで東山（とうざん）の隠者（いんじゃ）ともいうべきあなたも、とうとう採薇（さいび）の生活（せいかつ）に浸（ひた）っていることができないで上京（じょうきょう）させられることとなった。
そしてすでにはるばると科挙（かきょ）に応（おう）じて都（みやこ）にやって来（き）たが、自分（じぶん）の志（ここざ）す道（みち）が得（え）られないで落第（らくだい）してしまうなどと、だれがいおうか。だれも思（おも）いもかけなかったことだ。長江（ちょうこう）と淮河（わいが）のあたりを陽春（ようしゅん）四月（しがつ）寒食（かんしょく）の日（ひ）に渡（わた）って、都（みやこ）にはまた春衣（しゅんい）を縫（ぬ）う季節（きせつ）に出会（であ）うまで滞在（たいざい）したというのに。
今（いま）、ここ長安（ちょうあん）の街道（かいどう）のほとりで、送別（そうべつ）の宴（うたげ）を催（もよお）すのは、心（こころ）を許（ゆる）し合（あ）った君（きみ）が、わたしのもとを去（さ）ってゆくからなのだ。途中（とちゅう）君（きみ）はーきっと舟（ふね）を浮（う）かべて失意（しつい）の心（こころ）を運（はこ）んで行（ゆ）くのであろうが、まもなく故郷（こきょう）の家（いえ）に着（つ）いて隠（かく）れ住（す）む身（み）となろう。
見（み）れば遠（とお）くに見（み）える樹（き）は、去（さ）り行（ゆ）く旅人（たびびと）である君（きみ）を伴（ともな）うかのように立（た）ち、心細（こころぼそ）くぽつんと見（み）える町（まち）は、落日（らくじつ）の光（ひかり）を浴（あ）びている。君（きみ）のために巡（めぐ）らしたわたしの計画（けいかく）が偶然（ぐうぜん）採用（さいよう）されなかっただけなのだ。だから世（よ）に真（しん）の知己（ちき）はめったにいないのだ、などということはやめて欲（ほ）しい。
