IN the past we jested of widowhood;
Today it has come before my eyes.
Your clothes have neatly all been given away;
But the needlework still remains that I cannot beat to
uncover.
I yet remember the old affection, and am kind to maids
and men,
And for that dream I have given away money.
I know that this sorrow is the lot of all,
But when man and wife have shared poverty a hundred
things bring grief.
