The crane, with a twig of bitter peach in his bill,
Rested but once in thousand miles.
He wanted to go to the mountain of P'eng-lai,
And the peach was to serve him as food on
the way.
Still far from his goal, his feathers dropped off;
Parted from the flock, his heart grew sad.
And when he hurried home to his nest,
He found that his wife no longer knew him.
