I am living a stolen life in the evening of age; Even homecoming means
but little peace and joy. The dear boy keeps close to my knees; Her fears
that I might again go away. I remember last year we liked to enjoy the
breeze; He and I would circle the trees by the pond. Just now the north
wind is howling the approach of winter; As I think over our needs, I
have at least a hundred worries. Thank God, the harvest has been good;
And I can almost see the drippings from thw wine press. At least there
will be enough to drink, To assuage the memories of frustration.
It's odd to be an old man and have new joy in life to cherish little pleasure amidst the larger woes my darling son hugs my knees afraid I'll disappear again I think about last year when he and I escaped the heat lying beneath the trees that rim the pond but now there's a north wind blowing that tells us winter's coming I have to think about our needs to face these hundred worries I hear, at any rate, the harvests have been good the wine is being pressed I'll have enough to drink to drown bad memories nd help fend off unhappy thoughts. |
