A lamp flickers with my sleeplessness, The delicate scent of burning in-
cense clears my senses. The lofty hall is especially awesome in the depth
of night; The tinkling of the eave-bells tells me there is wind.
Darkness in the temple yard has shut off all spring colors; But the fra-
grance of unseen blossoms floats in the quiet enclosure. The Jude String
stars are sinking; only a few are left above the roof, Where the iron
phoenix driven by wind seems ready to fly.
Soon the chant of Buddhist litanies will rise in the cloisters, I had bet-
ter stay in bed to hear out the last bells, For on the bright morrow I
shall be tramping the plowed fields, And I dread the thought of flying
dust and brown sands.
I am sleepless in the glow and shadow of the lamplight. The heart at peace breathes the incense of dedication. Between the temple walls the night is bottomless. The gold wind bells quiver in the breeze. The courtyard shuts in the deep Darkness of the Spring night. In the blackness the crystalline pool Exhales the perfume of flowers. The Northern Crown crosses the sky Cut by the temple roof, Where an iron phoenix soars and twists in the air. The chanting of prayers floats from the hall. Fading bell notes eddy by my bed. Tomorrow in the sunlight. I shall walk in the manured fields, And weep for the yellow dust of the dead. I lie awake and watch the flicker of the lamp delicate odor of incense helps to clear my thoughts mostly filled with darkness the central hall looms large sound of a wind chime tinkling below the eaves The flowers just outside are all invisible but I can smell thier fragrance here in the quiet dark one of the constellations is setting behind the roof passing the iron phoenix fixed at the temple's peak Pretty soon the monks will start to chant their sutras the bell calls them to prayer I stay in bed before very long I'll have to rise and walk across plowed fields facing the dust and wind facing my fears and griefs. |
