The Creator to the perilous defile had given birth: There is nothing like the grandiose sight of Sword Gate on earth! The rolling hills embosom the vast district of the Southwest; All of the jaggy and rocky sides are to the north thrust. Like huge walls, the two precipices rise up face to face — The seeming city wall and outer wall to guard the place. If a soldier stands at the mouth of the pass with enmity, A million foes could not come to its vicinity. While valuables are carried through the pass to the Central Plains, The Min and Emei Mountains are shrouded in the clouds of complaints. Ere the times the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors reigned, The peasants never thought their dogs and chickens should be restrained. The later reigns valued the conciliation policy; By laying down tributes, the policy had gone astray. From then on the there were ambitious heroes looking haughty; They wanted to be overlords or monarchs of the country. Swallowing up each other and tearing apart the land, The rival principalities wouldn't give up what came to hand. I would if I could denounce the Founder for what He founded, And raze out the screen-like mountain chains to level ground! Yet even thus I am afraid it may bring peach by chance; And in silence I feel sad when the winds make my clothes dance.
