You who come from the old village—
Tell me what is happening there?
When you left, were the chill plum-blossoms
Flowering beneath the white window?
I The cottage where I now live Faces the outlet of Mêng-chin River. 0 Boats come often from the south, Will they, I wonder, take my letters home? II You have come from my native village. You must know what is happening there? The day you left—did you notice that winter plum By my latticed window? Was it yet in bloom? III Already blossoms climb the winter plum here, And bird song is heard once more. With a sad heart I note the spring grass turning green yet again: I fear lest it over-grow the marble stairs. Sir, from my dear old home you come, And all its glories you can name; Oh tell me, — has the winter-plum Yet blossomed o'er the window-frame? I live by the river at Meng harbour My door faces the mouth of Meng harbour Ships from the south are always arriving－ Is there a letter for me? * You've just come from my village You must have news of my village－ That winter plum outside her curtained window－ Tell me, had it flowered when you left? * I see the winter plum is out And I hear the birds singing again I am sick at heart to see the spring weeds And dread they may grow to my door. |
