OVER the River Ch'u there falls a drizzle;
The evening bells of Nanking are tolling;
Scarce visible, the sails press forward slowly;
In the darkness birds take their flight but tardily.
Hai-men is in the far distance;
On the bank the trees are lush and green.
As you depart, my feelings overpower me,
And tears fall on my dress like threads of rain.
Is it raining on the river all the way to Ch'u?— The evening bell comes to us from Nan-king. Your wet sail drags and is loath to be going And shadowy birds are flying slow. We cannot see the deep ocean-gate— Only the boughs at Pu-kou, newly dripping. Likewise, because of our great love, There are threads of water on our faces.
