She saw I had no clothes and went digging through her wicker trunks;
I wheeled her into buying wine—off came her golden hairpins!
Garden greens filled our tray — we were thankful for lanky bean-stalks;
fallen leaves eked out the firewood—how we eyed the old ash tree!
Today my pay comes to more than a hundred thousand—
and all I can offer are fasts and services for your soul!
