Paired horses setting nightfall against
their hooves on a road that sinks into mire
no matter which way we detour ;
the border came upon us in a man
wearing a large one piece cloak ,
a locust's larval case . Here , streams
grind the unpeopled mountain down-
ward through the unheard dried leaves .
No one spoke as we climbed to the pass ,
and rain was curdling the air into snow .
