Alone I sit in dark bamboo,
strumming the lute, whistling away;
deep woods that no one knows,
where a bright moon comes to shine on me.
AMONG bamboos serene I sit alone, Playing on the lyre and singing a high-pitched song. In the thick woods no one will ever know of my presence; The moon alone sends forth its lustrous rays. Lying alone in this dark bamboo grove, Playing on my flute, continually whistling, In this dark wood where no one comes, The bright moon comes to shine on me. Alone I sit in dark bamboo, strumming the lute, whistling away; deep woods that no one knows, where a bright moon comes to shine on me. Deep in the bamboo grove, sitting alone, I thrum my lute as I whistle a tune. No one knows I am in this thicket Save the bright moon looking down on me. Beneath the bamboo grove, alone, I seize my lute and sit and croon; No ear to hear me, save mine own; No eye to see me, save the moon. |

たったひとり、ほの暗い竹藪のなかの館に坐っている。琴を彈いたり、また長く聲をひいてうそぶいたりする。こんな奥深い林のことだから、誰も知っていない。しかし明月はあたかもそのおもむきを理解しているかのように、やって來て照らしてくれる。
獨（ひと）り坐（ざ）す 幽篁（いろくわう）の裏（うち）。 彈琴（だんきん） 復（また） 長嘯（ちゃうせう）。 深林（しんりん） 人（ひと）知（し）らず。 明月（めいげつ） 來（きた）って相照（あひて）らす。 獨り坐す 幽篁の裏。 彈琴 復 長嘯。 深林 人知らず。 明月 來って相照らす。 奥深い竹林の中にただ一人坐をかまえ、琴を彈じたり、また聲長く詩歌を吟じたりして、心ゆく限り楽しんでいる。深林中の事ゆえ誰一人知るものはなく、もとより訪ね問う人もない。ただ天上の明月のみが、わが意を解する友の如く、來たって吾を照らしてくれるのみである。 獨（とく）坐（さ）す幽篁（いうくわう）の裏（うち）、彈琴復長嘯（だんきんまたちゃうせう）す。深林（しんりん）人（ひと）知（し）らず、明月（めいげつ）來（きた）つて相（あい）照（て）らす。 獨坐す幽篁の裏、彈琴復長嘯す。深林人知らず、明月來つて相照らす。 |
