A new home at the mouth of Meng-cheng; old trees—last of a stand of dying willow: years to come, who will be its owner, vainly pitying the one who had it before? My new home stands sentinel at the entrance to Mêng-ch'êng Where, of an ancient wood, only time-worn willows still remain... Who would come to live in this lonely place Unless to brood over the sorrows of the past? MY new home is at the entrance to Mêng-ch'êng; Of the old trees there remain only some fading willows. After me who will be be here? It is vain to grieve that others had it before me, MY new home is at the entrance to Mêng-ch'êng; Of the old trees there remain only some fading willows. こんど新たに古城址孟城の入口に家をつくることになった。そこは城址にふさわしく皆の木立の名ごりとしてすがれた柳の數株がさびしく立ちならんでいる。これを眺めて、私はいろいろと前の地主のことなどを思いめぐらす。しかし私だっていつまでも土地を保てるものではない。後の時代にこの地の所有者となるのは誰であろうか。その人はやはり私のように、ただわけもなくここが昔の人の所有であったことを悲しみなつかしむことであろう。
