Chilled by excess of passion,
Unsmiling, we drink farewell.
The candle, overcome by sorrow,
Weeps for us all through the night.
LOVE is here, but I can show no signs of love; And before the wine-cups I feel that no smile will come. Even the waxen candles have a heart to bewail tlis parting; For us humans they drop tears until the dawn. I feel so much, and yet it seems I do not feel at all; Before this cup I cannot smile, that alone I know. The candle still will take to heart the agony of parting And shed its drops on my behalf until the coming day. |
